withered stumps

The withered stump is presumably what remains of poor Philomela's tongue; but there are other withered stumps of time/...told upon the walls. The bedroom is decorated with other images of paralysis and silence, like the motionless swimmimg of the carved dolphin, and the staring forms...hushing the room enclosed.

These images suggest the themes of communication breakdown and destructive relationships.
