co co rico

Co co rico is the cry of the cockerel. It provides a dramatic wake-up call, announcing the arrival of the lightning, the rain, and the possibility of redemption.

The allusion is also appropriate in the context of the first stanza of this part of the poem, which refers to the aftermath of the Crucifixion and the despair of the Disciples. At the Last Supper, Peter assured Jesus that he would never let him down; Jesus however prophesied that Peter would deny knowledge of him three times before the cockerel next crowed. Sure enough, when Jesus is arrested, Peter denies three separate accusations of being a follower of Christ. Peter's loss of moral courage is however followed by repentance and forgiveness. His tears of repentance are like the drops of rain that herald the Thunder.
