Biblical allusions
There are two further allusions to books of the Old Testament:
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief alludes to a passage from the Book of Ecclesiastes, which refers to old age and death; and
There is shadow under this red rock, alluding to the prophet Isaiah: "the shadow of a great rock in a weary land."
Both contribute to the depiction here of The Waste Land as a biblical desert.
